Sometimes the best trips are the trips that can be done in a day.  Living in the DMV area provides quick access to a number of activities that meet this criteria.  While family vacations are exciting, spending hours in the car with little ones may not make for an easy getaway.  Join in with other family’s who have ditched the road trips in favor of a DMV staycation.  Here are some great options:

Maryland:  The state of Maryland offers lakes, beaches, museums, and sports stadiums.  Thanks to living in the DMV these activities are just a few short minutes or hours away.

Ocean City, MD & Chesapeake Bay make excellent choices for day trips.  You can spend all day kayaking, swimming, fishing, jet skiing, boating, or sun bathing.

The National Aquarium offers activities that include wonders from deep beneath the sea.  You can purchase tickets here at http://www.aqua.org/tickets

National Harbor offers endless dining options, street concerts, vendors, shopping at the outlet mall, or water excursions on their water taxis.  They even have a calendar of events available here at http://www.nationalharbor.com/events/

Virginia:  Home to lush landscapes and scenic views, Virginia’s countryside boasts over 200 wineries.  While as long as you have a designated driver, visiting the local vineyards could be an all day affair.

If you love outdoor activities, you can spend the day in the Shenandoah mountains hiking or camping.  Virginia is also home to many great lakes and prime fishing destinations.

Bring out the kid in you!  Visit Busch Garden’s or Kings Dominion for the day.  These parks offer discounts for Virginia residents and something for children of all ages to enjoy.

Washington D.C. :  The nation’s capital is full of life and offers dozens if not, hundreds of activities that can fill your entire day.  Start at the Washington Monument and work your way around through history.

Historical Museums line Constitution avenue.  Your family or friends could spend the day learning about American history, art, or science.

The National Zoo is an excellent way to spend your Saturday.  Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the exhibits or the various animal houses.

Shop, Dine, or Dance with access to five star restaurants, malls, and nightclubs.  U street never sleeps and offers the perfect vibe for the best night out.

Traveling can be fun but it can also be exhausting.  For DMV residents, fun is only a short distance away.  Sometimes the best vacations are right in your own back yard.
